Senior Manager – Quality Audit

The Senior Manager, Audit Quality is responsible for guiding NVS in achieving its quality control objectives through monitoring services, efficiency reviews, and ensuring compliance standards. This is accomplished by increasing assurance engagement efficiencies and customizing audit methodologies to meet NVS’s client needs. The incumbent ensures the NVS team is highly proficient with assurance standards through professional development and confirms they have a comprehensive understanding of the Canadian Auditing Standards (CAS) requirements. The incumbent provides guidance in all best practice areas of assurance. The incumbent will resolve questions relating to independence, integrity, and objectivity matters and is available to provide guidance as needed.

 

The specific responsibilities are:

  • Maintains and distributes the NVS client list and Public Entity Circulation List (PECL).

  • Reviews our Compliance, Confidentiality and engagement and performance policy and procedures at least annually, to determine if they are appropriate and operating effectively.

  • Responsible for monitoring our compliance with the CPA and CPAB requirements on an annual basis.

  • Responsible for maintaining the Quality Assurance Manual and the Firm’s accounting, auditing and review programs containing Firm policies and procedures on technical matters.

  • Reviews and updates the technical reference library contents during the annual inspection. Responsible for establishing Firm policy with respect to Audit Quality. Such policies may cover, but are not limited to hiring practices, staff orientation, training and staff development, performance reviews and evaluations, and communication of significant developments.

  • Reviews the Firm’s audit practice professional development program (including personnel participation records) to determine whether it is adequately meeting the Firm’s needs, providing for the professional

  • growth of individuals, and meeting mandatory continuing education requirements. An annual report is made to the Founding Partners.

  • Responsible for monitoring the Firm’s compliance with public company rotation rules of the lead and concurring partners.

 

Firm Independence

  • Upholds services which may impair the Firm’s independence.

  • Prepares and retains a memo documenting the resolution of independence, integrity, and objectivity questions for PECL.

  • Obtains information from Partners for matters which may impact the Firm’s independence.

  • Obtains annual confirmations from personnel and upon employment from newly hired personnel confirming that, among other things, they are familiar with our Firm’s independence, integrity, and objectivity policies and procedures; have read the Firm’s Code of Ethics.

  • Annually performs an internal independence audit. Reports findings to the Founding Partners.

  • Responsible for annually administering the procedures for acceptance of clients.

 

Compliance Issue Resolution

  • Resolves differences of opinion between Partners and audit staff on audit engagements, which cannot be settled by discussion among the parties.

  • Leads the communication with various internal and external governing bodies for issues that are not satisfactorily resolved within the Firm.

  • Develops and leads an inspection team to evaluate the Firm’s quality control policies and procedures for compliance with professional standards.

 

Training and Guidance

  • Coordinates with the NVS Assurance Team on the implementation and compliance of auditing policies and procedures.

  • Consults with Partners, Senior Manager-Assurance and Employees in the Firm on technical matters generally as they may relate to Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (should this be the Canadian Audit standards CAS) and the implementation of the Firm’s policies and procedures.

  • Updates the NVS team on current developments in accounting and auditing standards. For all RSM learning opportunities, this can be coordinated with HR.

  • Develops a technical reference library for resolving practice problems.

  • Coordinates the CPAB and Peer Reviews and ensures that all partners and senior staff participate in the knowledge gained by the reviews.

 

Skillset and Education Requirements

  • Holds CPA designation with 7+ years of experience in public accounting

  • Strong accounting and auditing skills including having highly proficient knowledge of ASPE, IFRS, ASFNPO and CAS

  • Knowledge of CaseWare, CaseView, JazzIT an asset

  • Demonstrate superior leadership skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal with the ability to liaise with the senior client representatives

  • Ability to establish and maintain strong client relations

  • Demonstrate ability to leverage staff through effective delegation

  • Strong project management skills

  • Dedication and motivation to achieve high standards of client service and professionalism in the performance of duties.
